By Robin Eschler (Guest Blogger)

Stress can be very damaging to your body as well as to your overall well-being. Stress is a “fight or flight” reaction to your surroundings. Adrenaline is released causing an increased heartbeat. At the expense of other area s of your body, the blood supply is shunted to specific muscles and organs preparing for flight or fight.

Emotional reactions to prolonged stress include anxiety and depression. High stress levels have also been linked to cardiovasc ular disease, musculoskeletal problems, lowered immune system and even cancer.

Here are 3 quick methods you can use to reduce the impact of stress:

1. Self massage – Northwestern Health Sciences University suggests these simple techniques:
· Scalp Soother – place your thumbs behind your ears while spreading your fingers on top of your head. Move your scalp back and forth slightly by making circles with your fingertips for 15-20 seconds.
· Easy on the Eyes – close your eyes and place your ring fingers directly under your eyebrows, near the bridge of your nose. Slowly increase the pressure for 5-10 seconds, then gently release. Repeat 2-3 times.

· Sinus Pressure Relief – place your fingertips at the bridge of your nose. Slowly slide your fingers down your nose and across the top of your cheekbones to the outside of your eyes.

· Shoulder Tension Relief – reach one arm across the front of your body to your opposite shoulder. Using a circular motion, press firmly on the muscle above your shoulder blade. Repeat on the other side.

2. Research at the Mayo Clinic indicates that longer term, spirituality can address the impact of stress:
· Focus on personal goals. This helps clarify what’s truly important so you can set aside items of less impact thus reducing stress.
· Connect to the world through friends, family and people of similar belief. By finding company in others, you feel less alone and helpless. When you recognize the connections you have with others, it helps empower and support you. It can even help you feel more at peace.
· Release control. When you let go of having to make something happen, and instead allow yourself to observe events in your life as they unfold, you are able to choose a response instead of simply react.

3. Learn mindfulness. Mindfulness exercises are a form of easy meditation. It helps wipe away the stress of the day and replaces it with an inner peace. Whether at the beginning of the day or in the evening, the effects are noticeable.

Mindfulness, A Method for Easy Meditation.

Meditation is a mind-body exercise that produces a deep state of relaxation and a tranquil mind. For many, meditation is difficult. Meditation is the process of clearing the mind of thought and connecting with an inner creative source. Most of us have an active mind with a constant train of thoughts.

Mindfulness teaches quiet observation of what is around us. Instead of “working” to eliminate thought, mindfulness exercises focus our minds on what surrounds us. We learn to use our 5 senses, hearing, sight, smell, touch and taste to become more aware of the present moment.

Mindfulness exercises, once learned, can be quickly called forward in an instant to slow our reactive mind and become conscious so that we may choose our response. To start the learning process, it is good to establish a routine.

Pick a time each day when you commit to setting aside whatever you are doing to relax and practice. A delightful method to accomplish this is the age-old practice of taking tea. By brewing tea flower tea, you accomplish an added benefit.

Tea Flower Tea and Mindfulness Exercises

Tea flowers are made from green or white tea leaves that are sewn by hand into a small ball around flowers. Each variety of tea ball has a distinct and beautiful effect when brewed. The flowers bloom and enhance the benefits of drinking antioxidant rich tea by providing aroma that is therapeutic.

The blooming tea also provides a focal point for mindfulness exercises. All 5 senses come into play:
1. The sight of the unfolding flower in the glass teapot.
2. The smell of the tea and aroma of the flowers.
3. The sound of water pouring into your cup.
4. The warm touch of the cup and warmth of the liquid as it flows down your throat.
5. The lightly floral taste of the green or white tea.

This exercise of awareness can be extended to your surroundings. It is best to create a relaxing environment in which to take tea, whether it is outside where you hear birds and see a garden or inside where you feel the warmth of a fire in the fireplace and see its flickering light.

Use your imagination to set a place each day to experience mindfulness exercises. Learn a bit of Feng Shui to optimize the experience.

Cynthia’s Comments:

There are a lot of adults, teenager, and even kids that are now experiencing headaches and migraines. As a headache and migraine suffer, I can tell you first hand it is not something I would want anyone to go through. The pain can take over your life! We that suffer from headaches and migraines are the only ones that can understand the pain and how much we want it to leave. I have tried many, many, many kinds of treatment for relieving the pain, traditional and non-traditional treatments. Some worked and others did not. As I searched for answers, I realized that a lot of my headaches came from tension, stress and for me the weather change. Boy those are the worse! I also recognized that if I do not drink enough water, I will start to get a headache. This is the first sign of dehydration of the body! I would like you to be aware of a few things; first please use your own senses of knowing if something is working or not. Your body speaks to us, we just need to listen. Second; try some self-help methods first unless you know in your heart that you need professional help. Thirdly; never give up; you need to know why the headaches and migraines are showing up. I have read, and tried this great book “Trigger Point Therapy for Headaches and Migraines” and used most of the treatments offered in the book.
Sometimes there are trigger point in the lower back or the mid-back that can cause your sciatica to flare up and cause pain, so you think! As it was said in the video that sometimes the pain comes from referred trigger points that can feel just like sciatica, but by working on the mid and lower back and along with the gluteus, you can help release these trigger points that may be causing you the referred pain. There are many things that you can try first with lower back pain and sciatica.

For Cynthia’s Comments… Keep reading….

You can first heat up the area that is sore and the mid and lower back as well. Do not forget the gluteus! A rubber ball is a great tool to help self-massage these areas and find trigger points. But please be careful on how hard you massage and stay away from the kidney area with the ball. Self-massage with a rubber ball is easy, safe, and very inexpensive. After you have done some trigger points and self-massage with the ball you might want to do some very easy stretching of the lower back and hips to help release the muscles you have just worked on. Remember if it is really sore. STOP, but also remember that doing trigger point work will be painful only while you are doing it and maybe a day or so after, and if you are still sore after three days, you know that you have gone to deep. So just that it slow and easy, the body does know what to do if you just give it a little help!

This tools looks like a great one, if you want to learn about it I have it featured here for you. There is an instruction book that comes with the tool.

I hope that whichever way you would like to release pain, with a massage therapist, trigger point tools or just self-massage that you at least try something! All the best to your Natural way of Healing Back Pain!

By Abhishek Agarwal (Guest Blogger)

Thousands of people each year are affected by the condition of back pain, not to mention the number of days and hours lost from work due to it. Additionally, everyday day thousands of dollars are spent each day for treatment an medical care for sufferers of back pain as well as the costs of health care. With the costs of health care increasing rapidly each year, people have started opting for methods of self-treatment for their back pain. This is especially true for those who suffer from recurring backache and cannot afford to repeatedly visit the doctor.

Doctors normally discourageage methods of self-treatment as the pain might be a sign of the start of a more serious condition affecting the back. In a number of cases, the back pain starts off as a normal back ache, but due to improper treatment it turns into a more serious back pain that becomes chronic and difficult to treat and cure. For people who know exactly what is causing their back pain because of some particular activity, self-treatment for the pain is suitable.

When the back pain begins one should get enough rest to observe if it makes any difference. In case the back pain is localized such as in the upper or lower back, it is recommended to ice it for a while in order to prevent swelling.

For Cynthia’s Comments… Keep reading….

Put ice on the painful area for around five to fifteen minutes between a few hours for the first couple of days. A number of over-the-counter medicines are available that can help relieve the pain in its early stages. There are also a number of anti-inflammatory drugs that are available. Whatever the case of back pain may be, these methods should be strictly followed while practicing self treatment for pain relief. Unless you are certain that your back is injured and require surgery, these are the methods the doctor will recommend to help you relieve the back pain.

If, after a couple of days, the pain still lingers, you can use heat to relieve the pain using things such as hot water bottle, a warm bath or a heating pad. A number of people have found that soaking their body in a hot oil bath containing essential oils is very relaxing for the back. This method is a popular self-treatment method for back pain.
Although on the first day, rest is extremely important, medical studies claim that complete bed rest is not beneficial for the back pain; if nothing else, it can only make it worse by prolonging the pain. After a few days, you must try to return to your usually routine as fast as possible. Exercise is an integral part of self-treatment for relieving pain as they build the back muscles in order to avoid injury.

A number of supplements have been found to be extremely effective in relieving pain as well as strengthening the back muscles. A few such supplements include Vitamin B-12, Vitamin D, fish oil supplements, magnesium and others. These can be found in any health store.
In case there is no improvement in your condition after a certain period of using self-treatment methods, visit a doctor immediately.
Abhishek has got some great tips to relieve back pain!

Cynthia’s Comment:

It is very important that you consult your Doctor first before starting any kind of self treatment, but there are thing that you can do that will not hurt you if you try them first. Like resting is a very important tool to try first. It gives your body a chance to heal naturally, remember the body know what to do! Second thing you can try is if you just hurt your back please use ice for the first three days and rest, and then you can start using heat after that. If your back is still very sore please see your Chiropractor or you family Doctor, Register Massage Therapist (RMT) . If you have already seen your Doctor, Chiropractor or RMT and this is an old one, you can use heat to help loosen your muscle and then rest. The most important thing to remember is that you should never stop moving, this has been proven that movement of any kind is very beneficial to the healing of any injury, unless moving makes it so unbearable that you can not handle it. Please STOP and go see your Doctor or Chiropractor right away, if that is impossible go to Emergency. If in doubt, please connect your Doctor, Chiropractor or Register Massage Therapist for any questions. There are many great books and tools to help with the natural healing of back pain, check out Cynthia’s Book Store and Product Store. Cynthia’s Comments:

Calling all golfers and anyone interested if self-care! This video explains what you can do with a golf ball and how much it helps the whole body systems. Reflexology is proven to be one of the most natural, safe and easy self-massage technique you can to do. The biggest thing to remember not to massage with the golf ball to hard and if it is really sore, begin slowly with the pressure and slowly increase the pressure of the ball; but consistence. These can help not just for your golf game, but for your game of life. With Reflexology you are not just massaging your feet, you are massage the whole body; inside and out! This makes Reflexology the most powerful self-massage technique around. Like Mindi explains that stretching too is also very important. With self-massage incorporated with stretching the body is so much more flexible, healthier, and the muscles now has the power to do it’s task, if that is golf, walking, or just playing with your kids. Warming the whole body is a very smart important thing to do before any kind of activity. You can start off with light tapping of your bigger muscles, starting from the caves, then your thighs, quads, gluts, and very lightly on your lower back. Then move on to your arms, biceps, and shoulders. Here you can just lightly move the muscles of your neck and scalp. Take a few deep breaths in and out. This is when you can do your self-golf ball reflexology treatment. Then with a few easy stretches from your neck, shoulders, arms, and the back and lower back. After that do some stretches for your gluts, hips, hamstrings, quads, and caves. Now you can just take either hand and gently rub all of your muscles gently from toe to the head. This is a great warm up for any sport, activity and like for me every morning before I start my day. Think about it, don’t you feel better when your body is warmed up, so why not warm up your muscles and feel loose, relaxed and confident for what you decide to do. So golfers, start off your day with a self-massage, self-reflexology treatment and last but not lest do some slow and easy stretches. Good luck with your game!
If you would like to learn more about self-reflexology or self-massage or even learning how to stretch with hurting yourself go to: Book Store and check out what I have there to offer you!

Injuries are a fact of life, so most people will experience a trigger point that causes pain or a headache for a day or longer. In our technology laden world with hours spent with poor posture in front of a computer monitor or TV, trigger points in the neck and shoulders are more common than ever. In many cases, you don’t have to depend on pain relievers or a doctor. You can treat yourself with simple techniques.

Trigger points are tight bands or knots in a muscle that get activated by overuse or repetitive strain that create a specific pain pattern. The pain may be distant to the originating muscle, and then can cause a trigger point in that muscle with a cascade effect of soreness.

Start by warming up your muscles with gentle movement or in a shower. Then find the taut bands within the painful muscle. These are exquisitely tender knots, some as small as a pea and others as big as a golf ball. Search the surrounding area, too, because there will be more than you think. Often pain in the neck starts with trigger points in the shoulders

Once you find the spots, you want to press them, but not with a vengeance. In “Pain Erasure,” Bonnie Pruden recommends a firm touch for 10 to 15 seconds. “The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook” proposes circular motions.
It’s important to get all of the contributing points, not just the one or two that hurt the most. Trigger points travel in packs.

If you don’t address them all, the few you relieve are more likely to come back. As soon as you feel your pain returning, gently press on all of the related points to stop the progression.

Use your thumbs and fingers a little as possible. You don’t want to create a new set of trigger points that start in sore hands. Many people like using a TheraCane, because it reaches around the back and provides leverage. There’s also the low tech solution of tennis or racquet balls, but the surface area will be too large for some points, and some people have reported success using the handle of a wooden spoon. A kind spouse or friend can be the best option, when available and willing.

After pressing on the tender spots, gently stretch each are for about 15 seconds. You want to stretch slowly and concentrate on relaxing. Then rest for few minutes before moving on to your next activity.
If all else fails, a visit to a bodywork practitioner who is experienced in trigger points can help. And, for the most persistent, stubborn cases, a physiatrist (not a psychiatrist) has more medical options.

Whether you lift ed something too heavy or became too excited at the sports game last night, back pain plagues the best of us. If you have simply “thrown your back out” there is not much that a doctor can do for you. Therefore, you are left to your own devices, searching for a way to cure your back pain naturally. There are several ways which you can overcome back pain naturally. Unfortunately, though, healing back pain naturally does not mean lying in bed having someone tend to your beckoning call for the next few days.

On of the mo st common misconceptions among back injuries is, curing back pain naturally will be accomplished through lying in bed for a week without moving. Recent studies have shown, however, that the exact opposite occu rs when the injured back is not mobilized. It is important that you try to go through your day as normal as possible (unless you are an avid mountain climber, in which case, you may need to tone it down quite a bit). Slow and gentle movements are advised when moving. It is always important not to push the pain too much, as that will have an adverse effect.

Within the first 24 hours after your injury it is imperative that you apply ice to the area. When using ice, the blood cells contract making the inflammation reduce and the pain ease. It is important to never apply ice directly to your skin. Instead, wrap it in a washcloth. This technique prevents the damage that may occur to the skin if it becomes too cold.

After the first 24 hours, ice is no longer an effective way to relieve back pain naturally. Instead, substitute the ice for a hot bath. A nice, hot bath will relax the muscles and ligaments. Also, the heat will begin to open up blood vessels. As the blood vessel open, oxygen and nutrients begin to flow through that area.

For Cynthia’s Comments… Keep reading….

This allows the back pain naturally to begin to healing itself. If you do not have time for a hot bath, place a heating pad on the aching area. The heating pad is a great replacement for those who lead a busy life, because it provides the same results as a hot bath.
If the pain is too much to be tolerated, over-the-counter medicines may be useful as well. Medications such as Aleve, Tylenol, and Advil have been proven to reduce both inflammation and pain. Be sure to take medication only as directed. Women who are pregnant should consult their doctor before taking any medication.

Unfortunately, back pain is not something which you are able to overcome quickly. However, with the above tips, you will be able to begin healing your back pain naturally. If the pain lasts for more than two weeks, healing back pain naturally may not be the solution. If this occurs, see a doctor immediately, because the pain may be caused by a more serious medical issue. Always take care of your body, because only you know your limits. Do what is best for you, and take precautions, such as better posture and regular exercise, in order to prevent back injuries in the future.

Christine has some really good tips for reducing and helping your back heal naturally. Ice is your friend when first experiencing back pain, at least for three days. Then it would be a great idea if you use ice and heat for 10 minutes for each. Remember to keep moving to your comfort level. Sometimes having a warm bath with Himalayan bath salts is a wonder in itself, taking out inflammation and releasing nutrients for the salt that the body will absorb to help your body heal faster. Yes, it is OK to take over-the-counter medicines if needed, just remember to read and follow directions. Please be patient with the process of natural healing. The body really knows what it is doing. If you would like more tips on how to reduce back pain naturally, check out all the wonderful Self-Massage Book and so many others books to help with the natural healing process.

Self-Massage: Relief At Your Finger Tips

By James_M_Harris (Guest Blogger)

We all crave a good massage. Even if we are not suffering from any long-term problems or pains, almost everyone loves being pampered and getting maximum pleasure out of a relaxing experience. Having someone, or something to massage you with a therapeutic touch can be a very good experience.
Massaging helps to relax nerves, muscle pains, spasms and aches, anxiety, and most importantly – stress. It also works effectively on the unsightly cellulite build-ups on the body. Overall, it can improve your general health and well-being by improving blood circulation in the body. But how will you get the benefits of massage?

Going to massage spas and salons may not be a viable option as it may be financially taxing and will make your daily schedule go haywire. Often, the available time slots may not fit in with your schedule. Add to that the inconvenience of the long durations of massage sessions. Not to mention, massages in spas and salons can be really expensive!
A viable alternative is “self-massage.”

For Cynthia’s Comments… Keep reading….

Although massaging oneself may seem somewhat incongruous, with the help of some particular techniques it may be just what you are looking for. Self-massage is the ‘in thing’ in this age of self-help. Think of the memorable saying, “God helps those who help themselves.” You can certainly help yourself through self-massage.
Self-massage can be beneficial for everyone, in this whirlwind of our busy everyday lives. Most of us choose to go online to order a pizza or spend hours on the phone recollecting how bad the day has been. Why then can’t we get the time for self-massage, especially since it can be a relaxing end to a stressful day?

Vibrating handheld devices, massage balls, foam and plastic rollers, etc. are all part of the equipment that can be used for self-massage. All these self massage aids have their own applications, all beneficial. You can use a handheld device while watching TV, reading, sitting, or even while resting on the bed. But the truth is, all you really need to perform self massage are your own hands. There are many resources available on the web which can teach you self massage techniques.

In conclusion, if you want to reap the benefits of massage without having to leave your house, you should definitely try out self-massage. The solution lies, quite literally, at your fingertips!
I’ve been practicing yoga for many years, and now that I’m teaching yoga too, I’m excited about sharing everything I’ve learned. Of course my own journey as a student continues. I trying to learn everything I can about human anatomy and trying to bring that knowledge into my practice and my teaching. I highly recommend that you do the same. I’m interested in being able to not just teach yoga to others, but to really help people to live better lives outside the yoga studio. I love how yoga can enrich people’s lives more than any other form of therapy. One of my favorite resources for learning about self massage is Jill Miller’s Yoga Tune Up® site. Hopefully one day I will know as much about the human body as Jill. You should really check out her site: http://www.yogatuneup.com
Just being a parent with two teenage girls is enough to stress anyone out! With self-massage, Reiki and Reflexology and sometimes using the universal energy helps a lot to relax the muscles and the mind, thus relaxing your whole body; yes, it is great to a massage or any other treatment, but it is not always the right time, place, and even sometimes we just do not have the extra money to get a massage. This is way I feel so strongly about sharing all that I have learned about self-massage, Reiki, and Reflexology to help maintain one’s self until you can have a treatment. Using the tools around you is like Jill said “just at your finger tips.” Check out the Self-Massage Books that are offered on my site. Just click the link and it will take you right there! May you find the magic in the touch of your very own hand!
